Division 8 of the Nigerian army highlighted its operational achievements during the celebration of social activities of Western Africa of 2024 (WASA), held on January 25, 2025, at the Parade Ground Batally, Giginya Barracks, Sokoto.
The event, which showed cultural diversity and military achievements, was adorned by dignitaries, including the special guest of honor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, governor of the state of Sokoto.
In his opening comments, the General Comandante (Goc) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 of the Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, emphasized the significant achievements of the division in 2024, calling a challenging and gratifying year.
Speaking about some of the achievements of the division, Major General Ajose highlighted the establishment of the 248 Recce Battalion in Illelah and the deployment of the Chief of Special Battalion of Intervention VII in Gudu as critical developments to counteract heritage and terrorism. The introduction of advanced air assets and combat facilitators further strengthened operational capacity.
“These initiatives led to the neutralization of several leaders of the bandits, the restoration of peace and the rebirth of socio -economic activities in our area of ​​responsibility (AOR),” he said.
The GOC also recognized the infrastructure improvements of the division, such as the asphalt of a 1 km road in the Giginya closure and the renewal of residential blocks for soldiers and their families. These efforts underlined the army commitment to the well -being and the preparation of the troops.
He also expressed his gratitude to the head of the Army staff, Lieutenant General O. Oluyede, and Governor Ahmad Aliyu for his unwavering support. He assured the audience the continuous approach of the division in maintaining peace and security in Sokoto and beyond.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu, represented by his Special Advisor on Security Affairs, Colonel Ahmed Usman (RTD), praised the army's operational successes and reiterated the state government's commitment to support military efforts.
The WASA event, rooted in the historical traditions of the Border Force of West Africa since 1901, provided a platform to promote unity between troops, their families and the host community. The most prominent aspects included cultural actions and the traditional beating of withdrawal.
In his final comments, Major General Ajose thanked the families of the troops for their sacrifices, describing the celebration as a reflection of shared achievements and resistance. He urged staff to remain attentive and professional in their duties.
