The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is asking all vehicle owners in Nigeria to register for the new digital Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) by July 29. The registration fee is N5,375 per vehicle.
The NPF announced on Saturday that starting from July 29, having the e-CMR will be mandatory for all vehicle owners. They are encouraging everyone to register within the next 14 days.
Although it is not clear whether the fee is the same for all types of vehicles, Newslodge tried registering a sedan and the platform generated an invoice of N5,375, including VAT.
The Police explains that the e-CMR is an advanced online system for storing vehicle data. This system will help in police investigations and efforts to combat vehicle-related crimes like terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
They also mentioned that switching to a digital system will make the process of documenting and verifying vehicle ownership easier and faster.
Police Statement
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, signed the statement and said:
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, is focused on improving the security of lives and property. This includes making the Central Motor Registry digital. Starting from July 29, 2024, this digital system will make owning and registering vehicles more secure.”
“According to the IGP’s instructions, services such as changing ownership, changing license numbers, changing engines, and changing chassis/body will be more straightforward. The e-CMR will confirm the vehicle’s authenticity and ownership. This makes it easier to track stolen vehicles and prevents innocent people from buying stolen vehicles.”
The Nigeria Police Force seeks the understanding and cooperation of Nigerians and residents for this new system. The NPF is committed to using technology to enhance public safety and national security.
They added that enforcing the e-CMR is necessary for a safer environment and to reduce vehicle theft by making it harder to sell stolen vehicles.
How to Register
To register your vehicle for the e-CMR, you must use an internet-enabled device like a computer or smartphone.
- You need to create a profile on the portal https://cmris.npf.gov.ng. You will need your National Identification Number (NIN), email address, phone number, and house address.
- To register a vehicle, you need the vehicle’s license number, chassis number, and engine number.
- Also, have your ATM card ready to make the payment on the platform.
