Sudiksha Konanki's parents, a student at Pittsburgh University who disappeared almost two weeks ago during a spring vacation trip to Punta Cana, has formally requested that the Dominican police declare her dead, according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

The authorities believe that Konanki drowned in the early hours of March 6, authorities told ABC News. In his letter, his parents expressed their confidence in the investigation of the authorities, the sources said.

They also recognized that Joshua Riibe, a university student from Minnesota who was with her daughter in the ocean the night she disappeared, is cooperating with the investigation. “They recognize that there is no dirty game evidence,” the sources said.

Parents recognized that legal procedures should be followed for their application to be processed, but assured the authorities that “they are prepared to comply with the necessary formalities or documentation,” according to sources.

The authorities have confiscated Riibe's passport, and his lawyers declared that “he is being guarded at his hotel.” According to Dominican law, people can challenge illegal arrest through a habeas corpus audience. If you stop, they must appear before a judge within 48 hours or face charges or release.

However, Riibe's lawyer and a source from the Ministry of Justice of the Dominican Republic clarified that “a ruling on the Application of Habeas Corpus hearing cannot avoid an arrest warrant by the Dominican authorities.”

Konanki's disappearance is being treated as an accident, the sources said. The officials reiterated that Riibe is not a suspect, emphasizing that “it is cooperating and being questioned as a witness.”
