The University of Benin, also known as UNIBEN, decided to close the school on Thursday. This happened because the students had a protest on Wednesday. They were unhappy due to no electricity in their school.

Students at the Ugbowo campus protested peacefully. They wanted the electricity back at the campus.

Benedicta Ehanire, who speaks for the university, said they had to close the school because the students wouldn’t change their demand for 24-hour electricity.

Ehanire explained that the university’s Senate, which makes decisions, thought the students’ demand was not possible. They then told all students to leave the hostels right away.

She also asked all parts of the university to follow these orders.

However, she mentioned that some staff, like those who don’t teach and those who do important work, were not affected by this closure.

Ehanire said, “Since the students of the University of Benin won’t change their demand for 24-hour electricity, which the Senate thinks is not possible, the university is closed until further notice.

“Students must leave the hostels immediately, and all parts of the university should follow this order.

“But, non-teaching staff and those on essential duties are not affected by the closure.”

Newslodge also mentioned that on Wednesday, the Senate of the University of Benin had an urgent meeting due to the protest.

During this meeting, the Senate said the students’ protest was sad, especially because they blocked the federal highway, which made things hard for travelers.
