Tinubu mourns Humphrey Nwosu, umpire who conducted the June 12, 1993 elections

Must Read

President Bola Tinubu sympathizes with the family, friends and associates of Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who died in a US hospital on October 24.

Nwosu, a professor, was president of the CNE from 1989 to 1993 and oversaw the historic presidential elections of June 12, 1993, which General Ibrahim Babangida annulled.

Before the ill-fated presidential election, Mr Nwosu's CNE had conducted gubernatorial and parliamentary elections using an innovative and inexpensive OPTION A-4, in which voters queued behind photographs of the candidates of their choice at the polling stations.

The President has fond memories of Nwosu as a bold and courageous administrator.

Expresses deep sorrow at the loss of a patriot and national asset who played an important role in shaping the democracy Nigeria enjoys today.

President Tinubu says the greatest honor for democracy advocates like Nwosu is to ensure that elections in the country remain credible, transparent and democratic, reflecting the right of the people to elect their leaders and shape their future.
