The Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences (NSN) says that diabetes and hypertension are often the most frequent risk factors for stroke, and the country still has a significant load of stroke and its sequelae.
They expressed concern about the scarcity and high cost of research modalities for the care of strokes, even when available in Nigeria, which further reduces the possibilities that Nigerians recover from the disease and their sequelae.
NSNS, in its statement at the end of its 57th Annual Scientific Conference and General Meetings in Benin, said that the lack of a local guide for the integral care of strokes and the care of colebrovascular accident coordinated between all levels of the medical care system is worrying.
The statement signed by the president and the secretary of NSNS, Professor Morenikeji Komolafe and Dr. Emmanuel Iwuozo, said that the stroke among patients with falciform cell disease remains common, particularly among the young population, even when depression in stroke is common but often without approach for an optimal clinical result.
Experts observed that the rehabilitation of the stroke is necessary to address various disabilities acquired from stroke, and the development of technologies, including telerehabilitation, robotics, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, were prioritized, developed and implemented throughout Nigeria to improve access to rehabilitation.
They recommended an improvement in the consciousness of the stroke, the recognition and early presentation of patients in the hospital and the urgent establishment of a National Registry of stroke to have current data to plan the stroke services.
According to them, there is a need for subsidized costs for the modalities of research of strokes, such as neuroimaging such as computerized tomographs, IRMs and trancranial doppler ultrasound scans and the provision of stroke units and comprehensive stroke and cerebrovascular accident centers to obtain acute stroke care Thrombosto -Endovascular Trombectomy, easily accessible in the Nigeria.
They also suggested urgent training and employment of more health workers with experience in the management of stroke and other neurological conditions, including rehabilitation professionals, to address the disabilities after the stroke and guarantee the reintegration of stroke survivors to the community.
