The Nigerian Youth (DCNY) diaspora council has criticized the approach of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by seeking repair over her suspension of the Senate, describing it as harmful to Nigeria's democratic institutions.
The Council raised its concerns during an emergency meeting held at the Hotel del Congress in Chicago, where representatives of several countries met to deliberate about the controversy surrounding the recent suspension of the senator by the Nigerian Senate.
Speaking at the meeting, the coordinator and president of the DCNY, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, expressed the disgust of Nigerian young people in the diaspora about what he described as the sensational management of the senator's problem.
“We express our deep disgust for the sensationalism that has characterized the public statements of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan,” he said. “His intentional violation of the rules of the Senate with respect to the arrangements to sit is the reason for his suspension, not his statements without the foundation of sexual harassment.”
The group accused the senator of participating in what he called a “global campaign” aimed at discrediting the Nigerian Senate and, by extension, the democratic framework of the country. According to the Council, their media commitments and comments to international organizations, where he described Nigeria as a country without law, have caused outrage among Nigerians living abroad.
“His rhetoric not only misrepresent reality, but also damages the collective image of the Nigerians both in the home and abroad,” Gbadebo added.
The DCNY warned that such negative representations have long -range consequences, particularly because Nigerians worldwide already fight with the increase in scrutiny, visa restrictions and discrimination fed by negative stereotypes.
“The reckless statements of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan reinforce false perceptions about Nigeria, which makes life even more challenging for our citizens abroad,” said Dr. Festus Danjuma, Secretary of Advertising of the DCNY.

The group urged the senator to cease his public outbursts and, instead, follow the due process through the Judicial System of Nigeria if he believes that his suspension was unfair.
“If you really believe in democracy, you should allow the institutions to be served to address their complaints,” he said.
Emphasizing the need for restriction and responsibility in public office, the Council reminded Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan that legislators are expected to demonstrate decorum and diplomacy in their conduct.
“His current path of sensationalism and highway is improper of a legislator. If he represents people, he must prioritize Nigeria's interests over his personal ambitions,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to defend Nigeria's democratic values, the DCNY asked the Nigerians at home and abroad to reject any action that undermines the country's reputation.
“Nigeria is bigger than any individual. We urge Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to stop their destructive actions, seek reconciliation and act in a manner according to a public servant,” said the Council.
