A tragic knife attack at a primary school in Zagreb, Croatia's capital, claimed the life of one student and left several injured, according to state media reports.

Police reported that a “young man” entered the school on Friday and attacked a teacher and schoolchildren with a sharp object.

The state news agency HINA, citing the Ministry of Health, confirmed the seriousness of the incident: “Eight people were injured in the attack, of which one child died.”

Authorities have detained the alleged suspect and investigations are ongoing.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic expressed deep regret over the tragedy. “We are shocked, like the entire Croatian public, by the horrible tragedy at the primary school,” he said during a government session.

Several of the injured schoolchildren are currently receiving treatment in four hospitals in Zagreb, and further updates are expected as the situation evolves.

In the aftermath of the attack, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic, Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic and Education Minister Radovan Fuchs went to the scene to oversee the response and provide support.
