Several Injured in Clash Between Herders and Amotekun Operatives in Ondo

Must Read

The Amotekun Corps, a security group in Ondo State, had a fight with suspected herdsmen in Sango, Igoba, Akure, over the weekend.

This happened because the Amotekun Corps were making sure people followed the state’s anti-open grazing law.

During the fight, some Amotekun officers got badly hurt. The fight also stopped cars from moving on the Ado-Akure road for many hours.

The Amotekun officers went to help farmers who complained that the herdsmen’s cows were destroying their crops.

The former governor of Ondo, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, made a law on August 13, 2021, that banned open grazing of animals in the state.

Jimoh Adeniken, who speaks for the Amotekun Corps, said the officers were brave and tried hard to calm the situation, even though they were attacked.

“The officers went to the farms with the farmers. When they got there, they saw more than 120 cows eating the crops, but there was no one with the cows.

“The Amotekun officers decided to move the cows out to follow the anti-open grazing law. While passing through the Sango Area, some armed herdsmen attacked the officers with stones, bottles, and weapons.

“The Amotekun officers got an order to step back and leave the place.

“But the attackers kept throwing stones and bottles. They even went to the main road and seriously injured one officer.

“To scare the attackers away and get back safely, the Amotekun officers fired shots into the air.”
