President Tinubu Enacts New Law Establishing N70,000 Minimum Wage

Must Read

President Bola Tinubu has made a new law that says the smallest amount of money a worker in Nigeria can be paid for their work is now N70,000.

This important decision happened at a meeting in the President’s office in Abuja. People who help make big decisions for Nigeria, like Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, were there too.

This was a unique meeting because it was the first time people from different parts of the government came together like this since Nigeria became a democracy. They didn’t know about the meeting until the last minute.

The meeting happened because some people in Nigeria are upset about how expensive everything has become, and they were planning to protest. The leaders are working hard to make things easier for everyone and are trying to convince people not to protest.

Why This Happened

Before this new law, Newslodge, a news website, reported that the National Assembly, which helps make laws in Nigeria, agreed to raise the minimum pay from N30,000 to N70,000.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said they agreed on this amount after carefully reading the bill last week. The idea to change the pay came from President Bola Tinubu after talking with important labour leaders who support workers.

Important Details

A while ago, President Tinubu and leaders of workers’ groups decided N70,000 would be the smallest amount any worker in Nigeria should be paid.

At first, the government suggested N62,000, but the workers’ groups wanted a lot more—N250,000! They finally agreed on N70,000 after many talks.

These talks took place because workers said the old pay of N30,000 wasn’t enough to live on, especially since prices of things had gone up after the government stopped subsidizing petrol.
