The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has recently attributed the altered egg composition to poor quality feed and egg storage.
The Lagos State Chairman of the association, Mojeed Iyiola, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
Mr Iyiola noticed that the eggs have recently looked abnormal, with the yolk larger than the white of the egg.
“Nowadays, raw materials and storage facilities affect the composition of eggs.
“The longer the egg remains in the box, the smaller the albumen becomes because the eggshell is perforated.
“There is usually an influx of air into the eggs and as the air flows, the egg content decreases.
“It is most likely that the storage of the eggs is what affects their composition,” said the PAN president.

Mr Iyiola also reiterated the importance of standard feed to enable birds to produce quality eggs.
“Another factor affecting egg composition in recent times is the ingredients of the feed the birds are fed.
“Due to the high cost of feed, many farmers have diluted the components of their poultry feed, hence the nature of the eggs they lay.
“Some farmers use inferior feed or whatever they can get their hands on to feed their flocks.
“Due to these alterations in the composition of the feed, birds produce eggs of almost inferior quality.

“Some birds are very sensitive; when you give them what is not good for them, some even stop laying eggs altogether.
“It will be a few days before the birds can be revived,” he said.
He therefore advised poultry farmers to give their birds what they needed at the right time.
