The Rivers State Police Command has saved 16 young people from job scammers and arrested one person.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, talked to reporters at their headquarters on Moscow Road. He said that the police team, Octopus Strike Force, got good information about people being held against their will in a place in Igwuruta.
He explained, “On August 29, 2024, at about 3 pm, our police team acted on good information that some people were being held in a compound in Igwuruta.”
“The police moved fast and arrested one man, Chukwudi Okoli, who pretended to work for a company called Qjoseansel International Global Limited.”
“During this operation, Amiye Joseph and 15 other victims were saved. There were 13 men and two women. They were brought to the station.”
He added, “Our first checks showed these victims paid between N650,000 to N850,000 to a fake company. This company lied and promised them jobs in the oil and gas industry, saying they would be paid in US dollars.”
“The scammers tricked people by calling random phone numbers and offering fake job deals. They then asked these people to come to Port Harcourt for fake interviews.”
CP Disu told us that the victims were kept in a place where they were watched and made to go through fake training.
During this so-called training, they were taught how to trick other people into believing in these fake job offers, promising earnings of $450 per week.”
He assured that the suspect and all the things found are with the police, and they are looking into the matter more deeply.
