The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Plateau State has arrested five people. They are accused of moving two trucks with 70 metric tons of fertilizer that they shouldn’t have moved.
The NSCDC’s spokesperson, ASC Ruth Rimvyok, told reporters in Jos on Monday.
Rimvyok said that the suspects were caught in the Mararaban Jama’a area of Jos South Local Government Area (LGA). They were caught because of a tip-off, which is like a secret message.
She explained that the fertilizer had papers showing it was supposed to go to Lagos and Oyo States. But instead, it was being sent to Bauchi State.
Rimvyok said, “Acting quickly on the tip-off from our headquarters and the National Security Adviser’s office, our officers caught these five people on August 21 and 23. The suspects were with two trucks. Each truck had 35 metric tons of government Indorama fertilizer that should have gone to Lagos and Oyo States but was being sent to Bauchi State.”
She mentioned that they are still looking into the case to find out who else might be involved in diverting the fertilizer.
One suspect, Abubakar Mohammed, said he did not divert the fertilizer. He claims they were told to take it to Bauchi State.
