Planting Crops at Dumpsites Could Cause Cancer, Expert Warns Farmers

Must Read

Sure! Here’s a rewritten version of the blog post in simple words:

A soil science professor from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State, Professor Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka, has told farmers not to grow crops at trash dumps. She said this can cause cancer.

She also said she is worried about the bad soil quality in the southeast region. She thinks we need to do something to avoid a food shortage.

Onwuka talked about this on Tuesday during a community event. This event was together with the Peri-Urban Agricultural unit of National Roots Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) Umudike at Umuajata Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA. She said some farming practices are bad for the soil.

She explained that burning bushes, too many people using the land, climate change, erosion, and using too much fertilizer all harm the soil. This makes crops grow poorly.

She warned farmers again not to plant crops at waste dump sites. She said heavy metals like mercury, lead, chromium, and thallium in the waste can get into the crops. Eating these crops can cause cancer and other health problems.

Professor Onwuka also talked about how food prices are going up a lot. She encouraged Nigerians to grow some of their own food.

She showed the women how to make Biochar and turn their home and farm waste into organic fertilizer. She urged Abia farmers to use MOUAU community services to improve food production.

Onwuka said rural women can’t easily get fertilizers. The aim of the rural outreach is to share new ways to grow more food in Abia and all over Nigeria.

I hope this helps!
