•As Ondo stops for Mimiko's 70th birthday
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on Tuesday described the former governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko, as an epitome of service who promoted the interests of the people of the state through his laudable programmes.
Aiyedatiwa, who stated this during a special evening of praise of the Divine Agenda held at the Akure Dome, to commemorate Mimiko's 70th birthday, described Mimiko as a leader who served the state with distinction and left an indelible mark on its history. .
The governor praised Mimiko for being a pioneer who not only started well but ended his term on a high note, stressing that such a legacy is worthy of recognition, emulation and admiration.
According to him, the occasion and celebration of the former governor's birthday should be seen as a joyous time of reflection and celebration, stating that Mimiko transformed the state in eight years.
Aiyedatiwa said: “Dr. Mimiko is a leader who transformed Ondo State through impactful projects and policies that deeply affected the lives of our people. His dedication to people-centered governance earned him the love and respect of citizens.
“This celebration is a testament to the legacy he has built and the love that people have for him. “Indeed, it is a rare blessing to witness such an honor in life.”
The Governor highlighted Mimiko's efforts in infrastructure development, healthcare, education and social programs, and said the former governor remains a source of inspiration to the current administration and future leaders.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Mimiko described her husband as a visionary leader whose works have left a lasting mark on people's lives.
However, Mrs Mimiko urged the political class to emulate her husband and work to leave good legacies to outlive them.
In his sermon, former Government House Chapel Chaplain, Pastor Wale Akinfesoye, urged Mimiko to continue dedicating his life to God and the welfare of the people.
He described Mimiko as a God-fearing man, noting that fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, and said Mimiko was able to achieve a lot thanks to the priority given to people's welfare and business growth in the state.
Akinfesoye, however, charged those in positions of power to emulate Mimiko and consider the opportunity to serve humanity without any ulterior motive, without fear of God, and keep in mind that one day they would leave their positions.
In his response, the celebrant, Olusegun Mimiko, expressed his sincere gratitude to the people of Ondo State and the organizers of the event for the overwhelming outpouring of love and appreciation.
Reflecting on her journey in public service, Mimiko said: “It is deeply humbling to be celebrated in this way. I thank God, my family and the good people of Ondo State for believing in my vision and supporting me during my tenure.
“This recognition motivates me to continue contributing to the development of our state in any way I can.”
Mimiko also acknowledged his family's role in his achievements, singling out his wife, Oluwakemi, for her unwavering support.
Mimiko served as governor of Ondo State between 2009 and 2017, becoming the first female governor to serve for eight years in the history of the state.
Traditional rulers at the event included Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo, Owa of Igbara-Oke, Oba Francis Agbede and Olu of Ilu-Abo, Oba Olu Falae, among others.
Highlights of the event included musical performances, prayer sessions and tributes, the cutting of a birthday cake by the former governor and the presentation of gifts by friends, family and dignitaries.
