Sixty-eight students from Edo State University, Uzairue, have officially become nurses in Nigeria. They joined the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) as part of their journey.
The students finished their studies in the Nursing Department of the university. They were welcomed into the council by a special member, Dr. Dorothy Oneh, who came on behalf of Ndagi Al-Hassan, the head of the council.
Dr. Oneh praised them for becoming certified nurses. This means they can now work in hospitals and health centers all over Nigeria. She reminded them to follow the rules every nurse in Nigeria must obey. These rules help nurses do their jobs well and treat people kindly.
Prof. Dawood Egbefo, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, said these new nurses are from the 2033/2024 class. This ceremony was the fourth time the university has welcomed new nurses. He believes the school prepared them well for their nursing careers.
Prof. Egbefo told the new nurses that being a nurse is an important job. It is not only about helping sick people but also about always learning new things and being professional at all times. He said, “You will take care of people who need help, which is very important work.”
He also thanked the state government for turning a big hospital in Auchi into a teaching hospital for the university. This change has helped the medical students learn better and improved healthcare where they live.
He asked the government to keep adding more tools and resources to the hospital so they can give the best care possible.
Dr. Beatrice Obende, a teacher in the Nursing Department, said these students spent five years studying to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She reminded the new nurses that their work is very special. It helps make people feel better and protects their rights.
She encouraged the new nurses to see their job not just as a way to earn money but as a chance to help and make a big difference in people’s lives. She was very happy for them and proud of their hard work.
Dr. Omoruyi Pius Omosigho, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health Science, was also very happy for the new nurses. He praised them for making their families and teachers proud. He wanted them to be good examples for the nursing profession and the university. He was sure they would do well during their future training.
