Nepal Monsoon Floods Result in 104 Fatalities, Thousands Displaced

Must Read

People living in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, started going back to their homes on Sunday. Heavy rains caused big floods, and at least 104 people died because of this.

In South Asia, floods and landslides happen a lot during the rainy season. But experts say that climate change is making these problems worse and more common.

This weekend, many homes in Kathmandu were under water. Fast-moving floods damaged roads and neighborhoods.

Kumar Tamang, who lives close to the river, shared his scary story. “We had to run away at midnight because water entered our home. Today, there is mud everywhere, blocking our doors,” he told AFP.

Nepal’s home ministry said that 104 people died across the country, and 64 more are still missing.

Rishi Ram Tiwari, who works for the ministry, said they are working hard to clear roads blocked by landslides. “More than 3,000 people have been saved,” he said.

One very bad event happened when a landslide buried two buses, killing 14 people in the Dhading district, south of Kathmandu.

The weather office said Kathmandu had 240 millimeters (about 9.4 inches) of rain in just 24 hours. This is the most rain the city has seen in over 50 years.

When rivers like the Bagmati overflowed, people had to walk through deep water to reach higher, safer places.

Emergency teams, including more than 3,000 security workers, used helicopters, motorboats, and rafts to help rescue people.

By Sunday morning, flights inside Nepal started again after being stopped by bad weather. More than 150 flights were canceled.

The summer monsoon, which gives South Asia 70-80% of its yearly rain, often brings damage and death.

Scientists say that more and more extreme weather events, like these floods, are connected to climate change. This year, over 260 people in Nepal have died because of heavy rains.
