A court in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, has sentenced a man named Sunday Asere to 14 years in prison for hurting a young girl.
Sunday is 24 years old. He went to court on March 22, 2022. His case was handled by Judge Adekunle Adeleye. He was charged with raping a 6-year-old girl.
The charge says that in January 2020, in Moferere, Ado Ekiti, Sunday did something bad to the little girl. This is against the law under section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law of Ekiti State.
The young girl told the police what happened. She said, “I am in Primary 1. I live with my mom. My parents are not together. Uncle Sunday is our neighbor. When my mom was not home, he made me lie on the floor. He took off my pants and hurt me. It hurt a lot when he did this.
“On January 13, 2020, the next day, my dad visited me at school. I told him everything. My dad went to the police to report what Uncle Sunday did.”
The prosecutor, Kunle Shina Adeyemo, called six people to tell their side of the story in court. They also showed the statements and a medical report as proof.
Sunday defended himself with his lawyer, Adedayo Adewumi. He did not call any witnesses to help his case.
Judge Adekunle Adeleye, when giving his final decision, said the doctor who checked the girl found signs of sexual abuse, but there was no clear evidence that Sunday had put anything inside her.
