Man Charged with Alleged Theft of N870,000 Worth of Rice

A man named Kazeem Bankole, who is 36 years old, went to court on Thursday in Badagry because he was accused of taking 10 bags of rice that cost N870,000. This is like going to the principal’s office when you do something wrong.

Kazeem doesn’t have a regular home and he was charged with two things: working with others to do something bad and taking something that wasn’t his. But, in court, he said he didn’t do it.

Inspector Edet Ekpo, a policeman, told the people in court that Kazeem, along with others who haven’t been caught yet, did these things on October 5 at around 2:30 in the afternoon. This happened in a place called Mosafejo in Badagry, Lagos.

The policeman said Kazeem took 10 bags of rice from a shop owned by Mr. Michael Oyediji. But some security guards saw him and stopped him. Then they gave him to the police to handle.

The rules in Lagos State say that if someone steals, the law can send them to jail for three years, and if they join others to do a bad thing, they could go to jail for two years.

The person in charge of the court, Chief Magistrate Mr. N.A Layeni, said Kazeem can be out of jail if he pays N500,000 and promises to return on November 14. Two people also need to promise that Kazeem will come back to talk about what happened, and one of these people must work for the government in a certain job.
