President Bola Tinubu has dispelled rumors of disagreements with state governors over the autonomy of local governments.
During a New Year tribute given by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence on Wednesday, he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to grassroots development.
He said: “There were rumors that we had disagreements over the autonomy of the local government. No. Simply drive development at the local government level. Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration.”
He called on governors to ensure that local governments meet people's expectations, calling them the foundation of development.
The President underscored the need for closer collaboration between the federal and state governments to address Nigeria's pressing challenges and accelerate national development.
He highlighted the critical role of state governors in driving economic growth, food security and grassroots development.
“You are the most important link to the prosperity and development of Nigeria,” President Tinubu said.
“The federal government accounts for between 30 and 35 percent of allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. “You own the land and the work is in your hands.”
The President highlighted the central role of governors in ensuring food security and monetary stability, urging them to prioritize agricultural productivity as a path to economic growth.
“We have to work harder, grow more and make sure our currency situation improves. “Nigeria will see prosperity, but it will require constant effort from all of us,” he said.
Acknowledging the progress made in several states, Tinubu commended the governors for their efforts, saying: “There is no state that we cannot visit and be proud of its development. Now we have better assignments. Let me take the abuse; You take the privileges. Together we will build a nation we are all proud of.”
The President also announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4, as part of a broader initiative to engage with states and assess first-hand the transformations underway.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, praised Tinubu's leadership and policies, highlighting his tangible impact on agriculture and state development.
“In Jigawa, there was a bumper harvest, but due to the strength of our currency, traders exported the harvest,” Abdulrazak said. “Most of us are encouraged to store in silos for rainy days. In terms of agriculture, the policy is working.”
The governor urged Tinubu to visit more states to witness the progress first-hand, assuring him of continued support, particularly in improving local security frameworks.
Reflecting on his leadership journey, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the governors and reiterated his commitment to leading Nigeria towards prosperity.
“I am glad that I applied for this job and that Nigerians gave me the mandate. “We will be on this journey together,” he said. “I thank all of you for where we are today and where we are headed.”
