The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) doesn’t like the new election rules made by Anambra State. They say it’s a big problem for democracy.
IPAC plans to go to court. They believe the new rules break Nigeria’s Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022.
IPAC says they will fight against any form of dictatorship. They mention that the Supreme Court had already decided on similar issues before.
According to DAILY POST, the Anambra State election rules for 2024 were quickly approved by the State House of Assembly. They did this just before the Local Government election planned for September 28, 2024.
Yusuf Dantalle, IPAC’s National Chairman, said, “This new election rule is bad for democracy. It shows that some politicians will do anything to stay in power. They are changing the law to fit their own needs, which is not good for the country.”
IPAC says they will take this matter to court to fix things. They believe the Supreme Court had already spoken against such moves by politicians.
IPAC thinks it’s sad that the Anambra State House of Assembly is doing this. They believe it’s an abuse of power and must be stopped to protect democracy.
When the new election rules talk about a political party, they mean the main leaders of the party.
IPAC believes the new rules are useless and are meant to take away power from important leaders. They say the rules go against Nigeria’s Constitution and Electoral Act.
IPAC reminds everyone that Nigeria follows the rule of law. If a new rule doesn’t match the Constitution or the Electoral Act, it is not valid.
Interestingly, the new rules agree with practices overseen by INEC but ignore the Constitution and Electoral Act.
IPAC has always pushed for local governments to manage their own money. They are also against States Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs). They believe INEC should handle all local elections because SIECs don’t have what they need to run proper elections.
IPAC thinks the new rules from Anambra State show why SIECs should be eliminated. These rules are, in their view, an example of why SIECs are bad for democracy.
IPAC is asking the Anambra State government to drop these new rules. They believe this will save public money and avoid confusion.
They also say that Nigeria has been peaceful since the youth protests, and these new rules could mess things up. They believe power belongs to the people and should not be taken unfairly by the State House of Assembly.
Finally, IPAC says it’s everyone’s job to take care of democracy to make life better for all citizens.
