Lagos: LG elections to be held in 20 LG and 37 LCDA: APC chairman

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi on Sunday said the upcoming local government elections will be held in all the 20 local government areas and 37 LCDAs of the state.

According to him, the impacts and contributions of LCDAs cannot be ruled out in the political and socio-economic development of the state.

Ojelabi, who made this known through a statement, announced that the Local Council Development Areas have not only been the closest to the bases but have also brought about the desired developments throughout the state.

With this move, the party leadership contradicts the previous position of the Lagos State House of Assembly, which held that local government elections will not be held in the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) of the state. in 2025.

The party's decision also disgraces a recent Supreme Court judgment, which granted financial and administrative autonomy to the state's 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Setting the record straight, he said: “We wish to inform one and all that local government elections will be held across the state in the 20 local government councils and 37 local council development areas in the year 2025. .

We observe with great interest the recent debates on the desirability of the existence of LCDAs and the need to hold elections for their political positions.

Our landscape is dotted with various infrastructure projects of LCDAs, including construction of roads, drains and markets, school and housing projects, primary education and health facilities, and various social service interventions, etc.

The various collaborative efforts with the state government on waste disposal, sewer cleaning and security are also indicators of its continued relevance.

We hope that this publication puts an end to further speculation about the local government elections so as not to unnecessarily heat up the political system.”
