Kano's State Health Commissioner, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, has expressed concern that only 30 percent of women in the state of Kano give birth in hospitals, a situation that has contributed to mortality rates higher maternal in the country.
He stressed that the high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is unacceptable.
Dr. Yusuf made this statement on Monday during a workshop held at the Bristol Palace in Kano, entitled “Innovation for Innovation for Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction (MAMII)”.
Therefore, he declared: “We all need to join and make sure that the intention of the federal government is achieved to crash maternal mortality in the country.
“The state of Kano is very important when it comes to the indices of the health sector and all problems in the health sector.
“Kano, like the most populous state in the country, has the greatest number of infant and maternal mortalities, which gave me and the governor night of insomnia when we arrived on board,” said Yusuf.
According to the Health Commissioner, the Kano State Government, in its efforts, has introduced free prenatal care and has provided equipment to more than 60 health centers and 63 primary medical care centers (PHC).
“The state of Kano instituted a community -based surveillance team and we are training medical care providers to be competent while increasing our financial investment in health facilities,” he said.
Dr. Yusuf revealed that only 30 percent of women in the state of Kano give birth to the hospital, which he explained, was the reason why Kano's state was the highest in maternal deaths in the country .

However, the Director of the Office of the Minister of Health Coordination and the National Programs Manager of Nemsa, Dr. Saidu Dombulwa, said the federal government has begun the implementation design of the MAMII in the state of Kano.
According to him, “starting with Kano, Nigeria is on his way to maternal and neonatal shock mortality.”
However, Dr. Dombulwa, who represented the Minister of Health, said the workshop was aimed .
He urged participants to intensify their commitment to the association and collaborate to develop the modus operandi of MAMII implementation.
“It is through our collective action that we can transform our aspirations into tangible realities with the development of Capstone in our health system.
“I am optimistic that we will deliver the expected deliverable in this workshop, due to the caliber of the participants present.
“Kano is a state that must be seen taking the lead in the northern part of the country. Obtaining Kano correctly means that he is on the right path, ”said Dr. Dombulwa.
He urged participants to actively participate in the understanding of the concept of Mommy to guarantee the gentle activation of the process in Kano and other states.
