The vice president of the United States, JD Vance, warned that foreign students in student visas could face deportation if their presence in the country is considered that it does not align with national interests.
Speaking during an interview in Fox News on Thursday, Vance emphasized that the problem goes beyond freedom of expression and national security, highlighting broader concerns about who can be part of the American community.
He said that senior government officials, such as the president and the Secretary of State, decide whether foreign students can stay or leave. If they decide that a student does not have a legal right to remain in the US, deportation will be the next step.
Vance warned that more foreign students could be deported under this new policy, but did not specify the exact number.
He said: “This is not fundamentally freedom of expression, and for me, yes, it is national security, but it is also more important about who we make, as a American public, we decide to join our national community.

“And if the Secretary of State and the President decide that this person should not be in the United States, and have no legal right to stay here, it is as simple as that.
“I think we will certainly see some people who are deported in student visas if we determine that it is not the best for the United States to have them in our country
He also explained how foreign students affect university finances, saying that many of them pay full registration rates. According to him, the best universities such as Harvard and Columbia often prefer to admit rich international students instead of equally qualified American students.
In addition to security concerns, Vance argued that this situation makes it more difficult for American students to enter the best universities because they are replaced by international students who can pay more.
He continued: “Many of these foreign students, most of them pay the full load. So, sometimes, what do you have in elite universities such as a Columbia or Harvard, you have an American middle -class child well qualified from Heartland that does not get a place in these universities because some Chinese oligarch, which pays $ 100,000 a year, occupies that place.
“Therefore, it is not only bad for national security, it is bad for the American dream for many children who want to go to a pleasant university and they cannot because their place was taken by a foreign student. It is certainly something we are seeing “,
