Afrobeats singer Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, says he started his music career because he wanted to help his mom, who was very poor.
In an interview with Capital Xtra London, Rema shared that his mom struggled every day because she didn’t even have money to pay for bus or bike rides. He wanted to change that.
“I was tired of my mom walking everywhere; she couldn’t even afford to use a bus or bike. So I knew I had to make it as a musician quickly,” Rema said.
As soon as Rema made money, the first thing he did was buy his mom a car. “The first money I made, I bought her a car. We went out for dinner, and then I surprised her with the car. Many boys would buy a car for themselves first, but I was still walking while my mom had her car,” he explained.
Rema shared that his mom is a fantastic person and the reason behind his success. Her prayers and support mean a lot to him. “She’s the reason I’m successful. Her prayers. She’s really proud of me,” he added.
