The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Edo State has arrested three men for trying to steal special cables used for streetlights.

The officers said they caught these men while they were trying to steal the cables from a streetlight in Benin City.

SC Efosa Ogbebor, who speaks for the command, said on September 8, they caught the three men on Uselu-Lagos road with the help of some local security workers.

The suspects are named Friday Alex, age 32, Favour Orji, age 25, and Daniel Biaru, age 23. They were pretending to be local security officers when they were caught at around 2 a.m.

When questioned, the men said they had stolen about 100 feet of the cable the week before.

Ogbebor said they would take the men to court once they finish their investigation.

Talking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Friday Alex said he is a local security guard but they had not eaten for days because their employer hadn’t paid them. He asked for mercy and promised not to steal again.

Favour Orji, who used to train for a job but did not finish, said he was trying to find a better life in Benin but things have been hard. To make some money, he decided to steal the cables.
