Kirk Franklin’s Heartfelt Story

Grammy-winning gospel singer from America, Kirk Franklin, shared that he stopped talking to his mom when he was 32 years old.

Kirk, now 54 years old, talked about it on the ‘Funky Friday’ podcast. He explained that he stopped talking to his mom because of something that happened when they were trying to help his sister. His sister had just come out of prison and was struggling with drugs.

“This is the first time I’m telling this story. I stopped talking to my mom when I was 32. My sister came out of prison and needed help. I was the only one trying to help her with a place to stay and other things,” he remembered.

“My sister was still having a hard time with drugs. It was tough for me to handle. We set up a meeting to help her, like an intervention. My sister is not my daughter; she has a mom.”

“During the meeting, my mom came with her new husband. Things were going fine. After it ended, we all hugged. Someone said, ‘This is nice. This is what a family should do.’”

“I said it was about my sister who just got out of prison, not about us. Suddenly, my mom’s new husband yelled, ‘You need to call your mom sometimes.’ I said, ‘I don’t know who you are, but she’s the mom, I’m the child.’ He replied, ‘Yeah, but you call yourself a Christian.’”

“The argument got intense. My mom did something that broke my heart. She held her new husband’s hand and said, ‘Come on, baby, let’s go.’ She left with him and her other kids. I shouted, ‘That’s right, go ahead and walk out like you always do.’”

“She didn’t tell him to stay out of it. Instead, she just left with him. I promised myself that as a little boy, I couldn’t protect myself, but as a grown man, I wouldn’t let anyone treat me like that again,” Kirk shared.
