The Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah has found the first polio case in the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, the Ministry said the sick person is a 10-month-old baby in Deir al-Balah who hasn’t had any vaccines.
Their tests in Amman, Jordan, have confirmed this, according to the Ministry.
Earlier, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres asked for fighting to stop in the Gaza Strip so thousands of children can get polio vaccines.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, want a seven-day break from fighting to give these vaccines.
In July, they found polio virus in the sewage in the Gaza Strip, so the UN wants to vaccinate many people against it.
At the end of August and in September, they plan to vaccinate over 640,000 children under 10 years old in two rounds, the WHO said in Geneva.
The UN health agency said earlier that three children in the Gaza Strip might have symptoms of polio, like sudden inability to move.
Polio is a disease that spreads easily and can cause kids to be unable to move their muscles forever, or even die.
The virus often spreads when people drink dirty water.
