Last week in Anambra State, a man named Lawrence Okeke was arrested. He used to work for the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The police arrested him because he was doing something wrong with the electricity meters for customers.
Emeka Ezeh, who speaks for EEDC, told everyone about this on Thursday in Enugu.
Lawrence had a special trick. He would replace real parts of the electricity meter with fake ones. This trick made the electricity meter show less electricity being used than was really used. Because of this, EEDC was losing money.
How did they catch Lawrence? It started with someone giving a tip. EEDC has a team that checks meters. They went to look at meters on Bida Road in Onitsha.
At one customer’s house, they found a meter that had been tampered with. The real part of the meter was gone, and a fake part was put in its place.
The team talked to the customer. The customer admitted that the meter was tampered with and gave them Lawrence’s name and contact information. Lawrence had done the trick on the meter. So, the team tracked and arrested Lawrence. Now, he is at the Central Police Station in Onitsha, helping the police with their investigation.
Emeka Ezeh also said that Lawrence used to live in Adogba Village in Enugu State. He was let go from EEDC in December 2020 because he misbehaved at work.
Emeka was happy they caught Lawrence. He said it was a big win for EEDC in stopping people from cheating on their electricity meters.
He also said that when the police are done investigating, they might find out that Lawrence did many bad things to the electricity system.
Emeka warned everyone not to cheat on their electricity meters. EEDC is watching the meters very closely now. Anyone caught cheating will be in big trouble.
He also warned people about some former EEDC workers who act like they still work there. These people trick customers, take their money, and do other bad things. They make it hard for EEDC to do a good job.
Emeka asked customers to be careful. Make sure the person you are talking to really works for EEDC.
He thanked the person who gave the tip that led to Lawrence’s arrest. He also urged all customers to report any cases of meter tampering or electricity theft they notice.
