Must Read

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has given N100 million to help rebuild Borno State after a big flood.

He shared this news on his official X page on September 15. He posted a video of himself visiting Governor Babagana Zulum.

The flood happened on September 12, 2024, in Maiduguri and nearby areas. It caused many people to lose their lives and homes.

Borno Needs Rebuilding

Atiku said this flood was the worst in Borno’s history. He felt very sorry for the families who lost loved ones and their homes.

He wants to help rebuild the state and is giving N100 million from his own money to do this.

He promised the governor that other important people would also help.

He said:

“Now is the time to rebuild, because that’s what we do after such big disasters. We are not alone in this. We are all partners in rebuilding Borno State and my community.

“I am giving N100 million to help rebuild Borno State.”

Since the flood, many people and organizations, like the Nigerian Bar Association, have asked for financial help.

Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited Borno State. He said the federal government would keep supporting flood and safety victims. He promised more help for the state.

Last Wednesday, Governor Zulum said the federal government gave Borno N3 billion to help fix the damage from the flood.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Yobe and Gombe state governments also gave N100 million each to Borno.

What You Should Know

Maiduguri is having its worst flood since 1994. Many homes are under water, and people in Borno are very worried.

The flooding happened because the Alau Dam was too full and water overflowed.

On Tuesday, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, asked people living near the river to leave their homes right away. He also told them to use safe evacuation routes.

He said, “Because there’s so much water this year, we ask everyone near the river to take action to stay safe and protect their properties.”

On September 12, 2024, the Borno State Governor asked community leaders, business owners, non-governmental organizations, and rich people to help the people suffering from the flood.

“We are working with federal government agencies, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian military to make sure help gets to the right places quickly.

“I invite and encourage others to work with us to find the best ways to help. Together, we can create a strong plan that helps now and in the future,” he said.
