The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State said it had to pay a lot of money to free its members from police custody. This happened before the big governor election on September 21, 2024.
The party’s leader, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, shared this news with reporters on Monday in Benin City. He said, “Do you remember when the police arrested our people, saying they hurt someone named Inspector Akor? That wasn’t true!”
Dr. Aziegbemi also said, “The police let our people go, but only after we paid about N64 million. That was supposed to be for bail. But now, more arrests are happening even after the election! How unfair is that?”
Aziegbemi accused the police leader, who he thinks is favoring the other political party, the APC. He also shared that they heard the APC might try to set fire to the place where election votes are kept, which is called the INEC office.
The reason for his talk with reporters was to warn the police and other security people about what they heard the APC might do.
Some journalists tried to speak to the police in Edo State about these strong claims. But, when they called the police speaker, Moses Yamu, he didn’t pick up their calls.
Later, Yamu replied to a message by saying, “Can’t talk now, please text me.” When they reached out to another police officer, named SP Tijani Momoh, he just said, “Call the command PRO.”
