The government of Edo State says “No” to a request from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to watch Governor Godwin Obaseki very closely for security reasons. This request comes because some young people plan to protest on August 1, 2024, about the country’s economic problems.
Jarret Tenebe, the APC State Chairman, said Obaseki should be watched because he might do something bad if the government doesn’t arrest some APC members who attacked people at Benin Airport.
Jarret said this in a message titled, “The APC warns the Federal Government to keep an eye on Governor Obaseki”.
He said that Obaseki and some Civil Society Group members and cultists are planning to create trouble during the protest. He believes Obaseki wants chaos in Edo and nearby states to make APC look bad.
Jarret thinks it is worrying that the Edo State House of Assembly is not taking action against Obaseki. He believes the House should talk about Obaseki’s actions.
“The current situation is very serious. We must stop Obaseki’s plans with the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and thugs from nearby states like Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa,” he said.
He also asked the National Security Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to quickly investigate the meetings Governor Obaseki had in and out of Edo State.
Jarret wants the security team protecting Obaseki to be changed and wants Obaseki’s movement restricted before the protest.
He also wants the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, to quit his job because he was involved in the Benin Airport attack where a police inspector guarding the APC’s candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, was killed.
Jarret said, “The Police Commissioner, Funsho Adegboye, should be like Kimberly Cheatle, the USA Secret Service Chief, who resigned after failing to stop an attack on Donald Trump. If he doesn’t quit, he should be moved out of Edo State because his actions are damaging the police force’s image.”
“If these suggestions are ignored, it might lead to chaos in Edo State and Nigeria,” he added.
Reacting, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said at a press briefing in Benin City that the APC’s request is shocking and upsetting.
Chris said, “It’s surprising the APC wants the Presidency to watch Governor Obaseki when there are clear pictures and videos of APC members holding dangerous weapons in front of police, causing trouble, and hurting people in the state, and they are still free.”
“Their names are not on any watch list, and they have not been arrested or prosecuted. How ironic,” he added.
