Early morning inferno devastates shops at Dugbe market, Ibadan

Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed after a fire broke out at Dugbe market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

DAILY POST gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

At least three shops were completely destroyed by the incident.

The Director General of Oyo State Fire Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, confined the incident in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

Akinyinka in the statement noted that the agency was immediately informed of the fire and mobilized its men to the scene immediately.

He reported that three of the thirteen businesses were completely destroyed.

“On arrival there, three of the thirteen shops had already been engulfed in fire and we sprang into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby properties.

“The fire was completely extinguished and people on the ground were instructed on proper ways to prevent fire incidents during Hammattan and how to control it in its initial stage.

“Three shops were destroyed and operatives of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency saved thirteen shops and other properties.

“The cause of the fire was attributed to an unattended burning of garbage by the occupants of the premises. Therefore, the indiscriminate burning of garbage, bushes and weeds must be totally avoided in our communities.”
