Death Toll Rises to 18 in Bauchi Flood Disaster

Must Read

The Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said 11 more people died because of the recent big flood in Bauchi North Senatorial District. This means 18 people have died in total because of the floods.

The recent flood happened in Gadiya village, which is in Gamawa Local Government Area. People there are still trying to deal with what happened.

The flood also broke more than 200 houses and washed away over 300 farms. Many villagers are now without homes.

Two weeks ago, heavy rain caused a bad flood in the same Bauchi North Senatorial District, killing 7 people.

The rain fell for three days straight. It killed many animals and damaged farms and other valuable things.

The head of Gadiya village is Yau Umar. He told our reporter on the phone on Wednesday that over 100 people are now staying at his palace. Others found shelter in the village mosques and schools.

He is asking the government and kind-hearted people to help quickly.

Another villager, Amina Gadiya, said the flood destroyed almost half of the village. This happened because many houses are made of mud.

Amina said the villagers have very little food, shelter, or clothing. Many have lost how they make a living, so children are hungry.

She talked about not sleeping before the flood, which finally made them leave their homes.

Gadiya shared how men in the village worked hard to save women, children, and others trapped in fallen buildings. Help from the authorities came slowly.

SEMA’s Information Officer, Abdullah Saleh, confirmed in a phone interview with DAILY POST that thousands of people have lost their homes and farms.

Aliyu, another official, said they are checking the damage in the affected areas: Gamawa, Katagum, and Shira Local Government Areas.

SEMA has started to hand out help, including giving N1 million to each of the affected areas to share among the victims.
