At least 60 people have died because a big dam broke in Sudan. This happened because of lots of rain. This makes the bad situation in Sudan even worse.
The Arbat Dam is in Red Sea State. It broke because there was too much rain. When it broke, lots of water came rushing out. This water flooded farms, villages, and even swept away cars.
The dam could hold 25 million cubic meters of water. This water was very important for people in Port Sudan. This is also where the country’s military government is based.
Now that the dam broke, people don’t have enough water to drink. This makes life even harder for them. They have already been suffering because of a civil war that has gone on for 16 months.
Rescuers are looking for more people, but they think more might be dead. People have said the scenes are very scary. Some people are trapped in cars and homes that got carried away by the flood.
A local man named Ali Issa said, “People were stuck in seven cars, but no one could save them.”
Another person named Moussa Mohamad Moussa said, “All the houses and everything got swept away.”
The water also damaged a big cable for the internet. Now, many parts of the country can’t talk to each other. This makes it harder for people to get help.
The Sudanese Air Force is helping to rescue people. Some people ran to the mountains to stay safe, according to a local newspaper called Merdameek.
Omar Issa Tahir, the boss of the Red Sea State’s Water Authority, told a news site called Akhbar that the flooding destroyed everything in the area.
The head of the army, Abdul-Fattah al-Burhan, went to see the flood-hit places. The military asked for quick help from all agencies to support the people affected by the disaster.
Sudan has been in trouble since April 2023. The fighting started between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army.
This war has made millions of people leave their homes. There is also not enough food. The heavy rain and flooding have made things even worse.
