A group within the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, has chosen a new leader. His name is Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed. This change happened because there are some problems in the party right now.
This group decided to make a change after another leader, named Amb. Illiya Damagum, was suspended from his job.
There was an important decision from a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court said that the party cannot remove Damagum from his role as Acting National Chairman. This happened on a Friday.
But even though the court gave this order, the party still went ahead with choosing a new leader. The party’s spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, told everyone that Mohammed is now the Acting National Chairman. This was announced in a statement that came out on Friday.
The announcement said, “After suspending Amb. Illiya Damagum from his role, our party, the PDP, has picked Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new Acting National Chairman.”
This change is effective immediately. It’s done according to the PDP’s Constitution, which had some changes made in 2017.
The party’s leaders are asking everyone—members, important people, and all parts of the PDP—to stay united. This is especially important now as the party is getting ready for a big meeting, called the National Executive Committee or NEC meeting, which is planned for Thursday, October 24, 2024.
