The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Muritala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC) made N80.3 billion in the first half of this year.
Customs Area Controller Michael Awe shared this news. This is more than double the N38.7 billion they collected in the same period last year.
At a press meeting in Lagos on Tuesday, Awe said they made N41.6 billion more than last year during the same time. That’s a huge 107.5% increase!
Why did this happen? Awe said thanks to the support from Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi and his team. He also praised the MMAC officers for their hard work in making sure people followed import and export rules.
What they said
“From January to June 2024, we collected N80,351,299,068 in customs duties and other charges.
“Last year, during the same months, we made N38,707,054,216.44. So this year’s extra money is N41,644,246,851.56, showing a 107.5% rise.”
MMAC is not just about collecting money. They also stop illegal stuff from coming in. Awe talked about stopping things like tramadol (a strong medicine), live bullets, dried sea cucumbers, dried donkey genitals, and semi-automatic rifles.
The total worth of these seized items is around N6.06 billion.
They also sent out goods worth N266.6 million, with a Free on Board (FOB) value of $204.59 thousand.
Awe said MMAC likes to talk with their stakeholders (people interested in their work). This helps solve lots of problems smoothly.
He also praised the officers for their work to stop illegal imports and asked them to keep following the rules.
Backstory
Earlier, Newslodge reported that MMAC made N45.23 billion in the first quarter of 2024. This was a big 111.7% jump from N21.3 billion during the same months last year.
By the end of March 2024, the entire NCS made N498.07 billion. This means they make almost N669.45 million each hour and N16.07 billion every day across Nigeria.
NCS shared this info on its X (formerly Twitter) account, with a picture showing how much money they collected from all over Nigeria.
The Apapa Port Command in Lagos made the most money, N169.93 billion in March 2024. This was 34.12% of the total NCS money. Next was the Tincan Command with N114.16 billion (22.92%) and Onne Port Command in Rivers State with N71.45 billion (14.35%).
