In Yola, a town in Nigeria, a judge on Tuesday said that a man named Abubakar Yuguda and a woman named Fatima Abubakar should stay in a special place called a correctional facility. They are said to have been unkind to two young children.
Judge Musa Adamu said this about the two people from Makama B Ward in Yola Town. They both need to stay in the correctional facility until October 21. This will give more time to look into what happened and to listen to people who saw what happened. The judge wants to understand what Abubakar did and then also listen to Fatima.
One report said Abubakar said he did bad things, which involved planning something bad with someone else and being mean to people. Fatima, on the other hand, said she did not do it.
The lawyer for the police, named ASP Iliya Akawu, asked the court to wait until October 21 so they could gather more information and talk to people who know about the case. They want to be sure about what the first person, Abubakar, said and start talking about the situation with Fatima.
The lawyer who was helping Abubakar and Fatima, named Mohammed Umar, agreed to wait until October 21. He asked the judge if the couple could leave the correctional facility for now, promising they would bring people who are responsible to make sure the couple comes back if needed.
The police said no to letting them out for now. They explained that the mean actions were serious, and the harmed children are still getting treatment for their injuries.
The police and doctors are closely looking after the children’s health. Because Abubakar already agreed he did a wrong thing, the lawyer for the police said it is not safe to let them go right now as they might do it again.
The judge reminded everyone that, normally, people can be allowed to leave while waiting for their case. But sometimes, the court decides what’s best. He said the couple should stay in the facility until October 21.
Everything started when someone named Hajiya Zainab Mohammed from a place called Shelleng in Adamawa told the police about this on October 3.
The police said the children who were hurt are Yuguda’s kids with his ex-wife. Abubakar was seen in a video hitting a girl named Hafsat with a cable because she went to the toilet inside the room.
Akawu, the lawyer for the police, also said that Yuguda did not take good care of the children and let his wife, Fatima, act the way she did without stopping her.
The case shows the couple may have broken some rules from the Adamawa state laws made in 2018.
