Brazil’s coach, Dorival Junior, says it’s his fault that the team lost in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa América.
Brazil lost to Uruguay, even though Uruguay only had 10 players. The game ended with a 4-2 score in a penalty shootout on Saturday.
“I know these results are not what we wanted. I am responsible for that. But I also believe this team has a lot of potential to get better,” Dorival told reporters.
The match ended 0-0 after normal play time. Brazil couldn’t score, even though Uruguay’s Nahitan Nandez got a red card at the 74th minute and had to leave the game.
In the penalty shootout, Éder Militão and Douglas Luiz missed their kicks for Brazil. Brazil’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, did stop a kick from Uruguay’s José María Giménez.
But Manuel Ugarte scored the winning penalty, making Uruguay the winner.
Brazil was the runner-up in 2021 and the champion in 2019. This year, they only won one game in the group stage.
