A man from Nigeria, Liberty Kelechi Isaac, asked the top police officer, Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, to take action against some policemen. These policemen stole N3 million from Liberty at gunpoint in Bayelsa State in August.
Liberty was in Nigeria to attend a friend’s traditional wedding when some police officers stopped him. They forced him to unlock his phone.
When they saw a bank alert showing N10 million, they hurt him and made him transfer N3 million to them in two parts using the account details they provided.
Liberty, a businessman living in Ghana, told reporters in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday, that he got his N3 million back. The police leadership of Zone 16 Command in Bayelsa State refunded his money.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police of the zone gave Liberty his money back on a bond last Friday when he visited with his lawyer.
Liberty was happy with how quickly the police acted to catch the rogue policemen and return his money.
Even though he got his money back, Liberty still wants those bad policemen to go to court and face justice. “Yes, I got my N3 million back. By God’s grace, on September 13, I went with my lawyer to the AIG Zone 16 Bayelsa, and they gave me back my money on bond. But I still want those policemen to face the law for what they did. This is like armed robbery and kidnapping.
The top police officer is ready to find and punish the corrupt policemen. I thank the AIG Zone 16 Bayelsa and the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa for their quick action to get my money back,” Liberty said.
Liberty said getting his money back made him trust the Nigerian Police more.
“This bad experience will not stop me from coming back to Nigeria. It made me believe that Nigeria can get better if people speak up. Don’t think all crimes are normal. Speak up and the authorities will help.
I am proof that if you speak up, you can get results. I still hope the IGP will punish the bad policemen properly. I advise all Nigerians, if you face any problem, directly or indirectly, report it to the police. Don’t think because they are policemen, nothing can be done. Bring evidence and tell the true story of what happened. I believe the Nigerian Police Force will find and punish the bad policemen,” Liberty added.
Liberty also shared that he did not believe he would get his money back.
“At first, I doubted I would get my money back, but I have to thank the AIG Zone 16, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, and the PPRO Zone 16 for their quick actions.
In just three to four days, I saw results. They said the money was recovered. The delay was only in handing the money back to me because of some issues.
So after this experience, I believe that good things can happen in Nigeria if we speak up,” Liberty concluded.
