BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu Announces Lagos State Minimum Wage Increase to N85,000 for Civil Servants

Must Read

The Lagos state government is giving its workers a bigger paycheck. They will now earn at least N85,000, which is more than what the federal government is offering, which is N70,000.

The leader of Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, shared this information during a chat on Channels Television. He explained how his team wants to improve the state and solve problems.

The Governor said they’re raising the state’s minimum wage because living in Lagos is expensive, and they can afford to pay more than the federal minimum wage. He wants people in Lagos to have a better life.

The Governor even said he hopes to tell everyone about another pay increase in January next year.

He shared, “We’ve talked with our workers about the new N85,000 minimum wage. It’s not a competition. It’s all about what we can afford because living in Lagos costs a lot.”

“We already raised salaries earlier, and I wish to return in January and say, ‘Great news! The minimum wage in Lagos is now N100,000.’”

The Governor also shared plans about the transport system. He said they want to connect all five districts of Lagos with rail transport, making it easier for people to move around.

Things You Should Know

Back in July, President Tinubu agreed to a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers across Nigeria. He promised that every three years, they will look at the wage law again to see if changes are needed.

  • The announcement came during a special meeting with leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the president’s office in Abuja. Some important people there included NLC President Joe Ajaero, TUC President Festus Osifo, and some key ministers.
  • The reason for the new minimum wage is because many people in Nigeria are facing high costs. This happened after the government removed petrol subsidies and the Naira’s value went down. Prices have been rising for nearly two years, reaching a high level with an inflation rate of 34.19% in June 2024. Food prices alone went over 40%.
  • President Tinubu said that they’re making changes in the energy and foreign money sectors to save the country’s economy. He believes these changes will help, and future generations will benefit from them.
