Bloggers and Vloggers, Nigeria Content Creators Association (BAVCCA), along with more than 400 content creators, have condemned what he describes as a growing tendency of sensationalism and the judgment of the media for public opinion, after the accusations of sexual harassment against the president of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, by the senator of the senator of the senator of Senator Akpoti -Uduaghan.
In a press conference held in Abuja, Tabuko Kennedy, national spokesman for Bavcca, declared that, although the association defends the freedom, truth and responsibility of the media, it rejects the use of not verified accusations to tarnish the reputation without due legal process.
The association said that this is not the first time that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has made claims of sexual harassment against prominent figures, citing previous accusations against Reno Omokri and the former governor of the state of Kogi, Yahaya Bello, who never persecuted themselves in court.
They also questioned why the senator had chosen to sue the Akpabio assistant for alleged defamation instead of submitting a direct demand against the president of the Senate if the claims were true.
The association emphasized that sexual harassment is a serious problem that should not be armed for a political or personal benefit. While expressing their support for victims seeking justice, they warned against the use of media platforms to execute smear campaigns without concrete evidence.
“We call all bloggers, Vloggers and media houses that are responsible for informing about this matter. The accusations must be backed by credible and persecuted evidence through the courts, not social media campaigns, ”said Kennedy.
Bavcca urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to take his claims to court with solid evidence or give up what they described as a pattern of public accusations without legal support.
“The integrity of our democracy and public institutions must be protected from politically motivated distractions,” the association concluded.
