The leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State say it’s important to have a lively opposition party to help the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) work harder.
The PDP promises to challenge the APC strongly in future state elections.
Steve Oruruo, who is the head of the 15-member PDP caretaker committee, said this on Tuesday. He visited the state Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, at the police headquarters in Abakaliki.
Oruruo also visited the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS). He said the people in Ebonyi need another party to choose from, and the PDP will be that choice soon.
He said, “The PDP is making a comeback in Ebonyi. If you walk by our office, you can see we are getting stronger. But we must remember we are an opposition party. That means we need to stay united. Being united and working together is our biggest strength.
“If we stay united and clear in our goals, we can win. Our aim is to be the party that people trust and vote for in Ebonyi. We want people to believe that our best members will join us and win elections for everyone.”
He added, “We want different opinions to be heard. In a society, it’s good to have opposing views. A place without an opposition party is not good for democracy.
“We need a strong opposition to push the ruling government to perform better. It’s good for the people to have a strong PDP in the state.”
Oruruo called the police a partner in supporting democracy in the country and asked for security for their party’s activities in the state.
He said, “The police are very important for democracy. We need their skills and hard work for democracy to succeed.
“They have shown great skill and dedication. They have lost lives and done so much to ensure we have democracy.
“To have security and fairness, we need order. And that order can’t happen without the police.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, told the PDP committee members that she would create a fair environment for every political party in the state to function well.
She promised to be fair and objective in her duties, without any bias.
