APC Applauds Supreme Court Ruling on Financial Independence for Local Governments

Must Read

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised the Supreme Court for saying local government councils should get their monthly money directly from the central government.

A group of seven judges led by Justice Emmanuel Agim also agreed with the central government that state governors cannot just remove elected local councils and replace them with temporary committees whenever they want.

The Supreme Court said on Thursday that it was wrong for states to handle local government money.

Felix Morka, the party’s spokesperson, said on Friday that this decision is the most important step towards changing Nigeria’s governance since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy.

He also said it shows that local governments are officially recognized as an important part of the government.

Morka mentioned that this decision stops the system where states were getting money meant for local governments.

The party also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his clever ideas and dedication to making Nigeria’s democracy stronger and for helping local governments become more effective in serving people at the local level.

Morka stated: “This decision is a historic moment for strengthening our country’s democratic system.

“It shows that local governments are constitutionally recognized as a vital part of the government.

“We thank the Supreme Court for its bold and clear decision on this important national issue.

“The clarity from this decision will encourage more reforms to make local government administration more effective, transparent, and accountable in the country.”
