Anambra Police Commissioner Steps in Amidst Land Dispute Between Awka Communities

Must Read

In a place called Awka South, which is in Nigeria, two groups of people, Ezinano and Umuzuocha, had a fight over land on Saturday.

Both groups said, “This land is ours!” and wouldn’t agree on who it belonged to.

Many people from the Ezinano group, including their important leaders, women, and young people, went to the land. Then, suddenly, some very serious police officers with guns came and told them to leave. This happened because the Umuzuocha group asked the police to come.

Luckily, the police boss from Anambra, called Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam, came and stopped the fight from getting worse.

People from Ezinano told reporters they went to the land to show they were upset because they heard the Umuzuocha group had started to build on that land.

One man, Mr. Ezenwa Udoka, said, “The police came and said they would use their guns on us even though it’s our land. It was the commissioner who stopped them and saved us.”

A lady named Mrs. Gloria Chiama, who grows crops, asked those in charge to remind the police that they should not take sides in land arguments like this. She said the police should only keep everyone safe.

The leaders of the Ezinano group had written a letter on September 11th, 2024, to the head of the Police Service Commission and other big officials, complaining about a top police officer who they said was unfair in the land matter.

When reporters contacted the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, he asked the Ezinano group to officially report their problems to the police station.

He said, “We all know the truth here. If the Ezinano people have any problems, they should directly come to the police station and report it. They have our phone numbers, too, so they can always reach us if they need to talk.”
