The Deputy Governor candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adekunle Akinlade, has announced the party does not back Ladi Adebutu’s plans for the 2027 elections in Ogun.
Adebutu and Akinlade teamed up for the March 18, 2023, election but lost to the current Governor Dapo Abiodun from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to DAILY POST, although Adebutu hasn’t officially said he will run again, there is already a disagreement between him and Akinlade about the next election.
After the congress meeting, Akinlade, who is often called Triple A, spoke with reporters. He said there was an alternate congress on Saturday. This move aims to stop Adebutu’s 2027 plans.
Akinlade argued that Adebutu, who is from the same area as Governor Dapo Abiodun, should not run for governor in 2027.
He explained, “We know that Ladi Adebutu is spending lots of money to push his goals, but the leaders in Ogun PDP, including myself, Hon. Sikirula Ogundele who was chosen as the State Chairman, Otunba Jimi Lawal, Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, and many other party leaders, have decided to prioritize our state first.
“It doesn’t make sense for Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is from the same town, to finish his 8-year term in 2027, only for another person from the same town to want to become the governor right after.
“Today’s actions were a planned effort by all of us to say no to Ladi Adebutu’s 2027 ambition. He can try again in 2031, 2035, or 2029, but not in 2027.”
He also mentioned that they held separate Ward and Local Government congresses earlier and had a court session about it in Abeokuta. They successfully completed the State Congress on September 28, 2024.
