Just five weeks after starting a new council for Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, told the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, to leave his job.
Governor Godwin Obaseki set up a new team of seven people to run the university on July 18, 2024. Dr. Omo-Ehijele Frank Odafen leads this team. The university staff, especially the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), had been asking for this for a long time.
The ASUU wanted many things. They wanted a full-time Vice-Chancellor, more money for the university, and better treatment of the staff, among other demands.
Professor Adagbonyin, who confirmed that he got the order to leave, said he will step down next week. He will give his job to Professor Samuel Olowo, the new head of the College of Medicine, who will be the new Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Adagbonyin said that this change is part of a bigger plan to choose a permanent Vice-Chancellor for the university.
On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the University’s Governing Council shared this plan to bring in a new Vice-Chancellor.
“I will step down next week and give my job as Acting Vice-Chancellor to Professor Samuel Olowo,” Professor Adagbonyin said.
He also thanked everyone in the school for their support and for helping improve the university.
Professor Adagbonyin became the Acting Vice-Chancellor on February 8, 2022, after Professor Benson Osadolor was removed from the job.
