The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, shared some news on Saturday. He said that at least 20 young people were arrested after having issues with the police in Ikenne, a town in Ogun State.
According to the DAILY POST, some young people were upset because a traditional festival called the Oro festival was banned in their community. This festival was stopped to avoid any fights, especially since there has been tension over who should be the king in the area.
But on Saturday, these young people decided to protest the ban. They went out into the streets, showed their anger by burning tires on the main road, and ended up clashing with the police.
Alamutu explained, “We are aware of what’s happening. There has been a long-standing fight over who should be king in the town. Recently, the court removed the current king, but the case was appealed, so tensions are high. Because of this, the local government decided to cancel the Oro festival to keep the peace. We did the same thing last year. Sadly, some young people didn’t agree and wanted to celebrate anyway.”
He added, “We have arrested 20 of these youths and took two vehicles. They will all be brought to the state command at Eleweran, Abeokuta, to face the consequences of their actions.”
