Former Lagos Commissioner Tunji Bello Takes On New Role as FCCPC Head

Must Read

A former Lagos Commissioner, Mr. Tunji Bello, started his new job on Thursday as the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

Bello took on this role a month after President Bola Tinubu picked him for the job. The Senate confirmed his appointment on Tuesday. He is replacing Adamu Abdullahi, who was acting as the head of the Commission since January after Babatunde Irukera was removed.

“Mr. Tunji Bello officially began his role as the Executive Vice Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC today,” the FCCPC said on Thursday.

“Mr. Bello has lots of experience, and we believe he will be great at ensuring fair competition and protecting consumers in Nigeria,” the FCCPC added.

What Bello Will Do

Mr. Bello is starting at a time when many people are watching the FCCPC. The focus is on them after they gave a big fine to Meta, the company behind Facebook, for treating Nigerians unfairly. Bello will need to work hard to protect consumers in Nigeria.

The FCCPC looks after consumer protection in many areas, like telecom, manufacturing, banking, and power. Bello has a big job with a lot of responsibilities.

He will also need to make sure the rules for digital lending are working well. The previous CEO, Irukera, started registering digital lenders to stop harassment and bullying on loan apps.

Some progress has been made, but there is still work to do to remove bad loan companies and those that are not registered.

There are also worries about people borrowing money and not paying it back. Bello will need to create new rules to fix this problem.
