Man rapes NYSC member in Akwa Ibom, police say

The police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a man who allegedly raped a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state.

The suspect, Paul Edu, raped the NYSC member at Ukana Iba community in Essien Udim Local Government Area of ​​Akwa Ibom, police said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, disclosed this at a press conference at the state police headquarters in Uyo on Monday.

State police spokesman Timfon John sent the text of the press conference to PREMIUM TIMES.

Police said the suspect was the son of the owner of the building where the corps member lived.

The suspect went uninvited to the survivor's apartment and knocked on the door around 3 a.m. When she opened it, he threatened her with a machete and forced her to follow him to his bedroom, police said.

“Upon reaching the suspect’s room, he locked the door, tore off her clothes and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent. The suspect was arrested and a machete and a butcher knife were seized from her,” Ms John said.

Police also revealed the arrest of a suspected kidnapper, Ubong Archibong, in the state, who allegedly used a private morgue as an armoury.

Mr Archibong, a wanted kidnapper, is responsible for the kidnapping and murder of several people, according to police.

The firearms recovered from the private morgue, which the suspect operated as a gun shop, included two AK-47 rifles, two G3 rifles, one double-barreled rifle, one single-barreled rifle, five magazines and seven live rounds of ammunition, police said.

Baby factory operator arrested

The police commissioner further said that police arrested a child trafficking suspect, Eunice Eze, 56, for running a “baby factory” at World Bank Estate in Owerri, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria.

“The suspect specializes in stealing babies and pregnant women in Akwa Ibom State through her agent, Ability Tom. Ten pregnant women were rescued,” police said.

More arrests

Spokesperson, Mrs John, said the Akwa Ibom police, on June 23, arrested seven suspected robbers who allegedly broke into a warehouse at the Ibom Entertainment Tropicana Centre, Uyo, and stole several items.

Police identified the suspects as Udofia Jonah, 56, Ekerette Sunday, 30, Ukpe Ita, 25, Moses Etim, 26, Inyene James, Ekaette Nkrok, 42, and Aniefiok Friday, 27.

Items recovered from the suspects included “61 armored doors and 42 wooden beams that were to be transported out of state,” according to police.
